October books

๐ŸŽƒ Happy Halloween๐ŸŽƒ

Here are the books I enjoyed this month!

Here is the run down, compiled by the internet. I loved it and would absolutely recommend it!

The novel weaves together the lives of three main characters, told in alternating perspectives, and follows their emotional journeys of guilt, forgiveness, second chances, and connection.

  • Violet Powell is a young woman who served 22 months in prison for a drunk-driving accident that killed a kindergarten teacher. She’s being released and must rebuild her life while carrying deep remorse.
  • Harriet Larson, retired English teacher and widow, runs the book club in the women’s prison. She forms a bond with Violet through the reading group. Harriet is also confronting her own life changes, including her identity after being what she sees as an “empty nester.”
  • Frank Daigle, a retired machinist, is the widower of the woman Violet killed. He works part-time as a handyman at a bookstore in Portland, Maine. He’s grappling with his grief and the complexity of his marriage and loss.

Their lives intersect by chance in a bookstore: Violet goes there after her release to buy a particular novel she’d been reading in prison; Harriet is selecting books for her prison book club; Frank is performing his handyman duties. That encounter begins a process of transformation for all three.

My sister had recommended this o ever me and I am SO glad that she did! I loved it. Here is the synopsis compiled from the internet:

Miss Benson’s Beetle is a heartwarming and adventurous novel about Margery Benson, a lonely, middle-aged schoolteacher in 1950s England who abandons her unfulfilling life to pursue a lifelong dream: to find a rare golden beetle in the wilds of New Caledonia. She hires an unexpected assistant, the eccentric and vibrant Enid Pretty, and together they embark on a transformative journey full of danger, friendship, and self-discovery. As their bond deepens, the two women face both external challenges and inner demons, ultimately finding courage, purpose, and unexpected joy in the most unlikely of places.

This book was just real-life stories of librarians and booksellers and the stories of how they fell in love with reading, books, and connecting others with the magic of reading. It was just a really fun read!

Here favorite place…

If we have a free day, Eden has two favorite things: thrifting and Barnes and Noble and reading.

She loves seeing new books come out and the smell of book stores. It’s SO fun watching her fall in love with reading!

Cheering for something different…

This last weekend we went to our friend Morgan’s second round CIF volleyball game. She’s the captain and she battled! I got to go with my tiny bestie. It was a first for me…

It was a hard loss…
We took her to in-n-out and watched Oceans 11 which she had never seen before. It was sweet to have these three together…

never felt more connected…

Ryder and I went to Costco and he gave me one of his airpods so we could listen to his music together.

I can’t tell you what it was like but I swear we’ve never been more connected…๐Ÿ˜‚

where it started…

We spend an unbelievable amount of time with soccer, between trainings, practices and games for 3 teams. Everyone once in awhile I love looking at where it started:

Kit coaching Ryder when he was six and Kit’s tiny assistant coach: We gave her a bell because that was way less obnoxious than the whistle he gave her first…

Then he coached Eden when she was a tiny munch:
I look at them now and can’t believe how far we’ve come…
I love remembering where it all started…

adding some spooky…

Kit has been wanting to get so skeletons for a few years now and we finally found done really nice ones on a killer deal at Home Depot. So now these life-sized things have become a permanent fixture for the spooky holiday…

The best way to teach teenagers about the perils of alcohol…๐Ÿ˜‚
She was not a fan of the spooky…

10.23.2025

winding it down…

While Kit and Ryder were on their backpacking trip, Eden and I got into the habit and winding down each day, in our room reading. The tradition continues so the boys watch soccer while we get lost in our books…

Ryder’s Media Day

We got Ryder’s media day pictures and he just looks so grown up, and he keeps growing…

My quick thoughts on high level club soccer: if your kid isn't becoming a better human being from the experience, just stop. It’s not worth it. This experience has brought such character building, strength in being a team mate with strong sportsmanship, and learning the difference of humble confidence and prideful cockiness all while he loves every second… This kid is a leader and we are so proud of him, on and off the field…

Hazie’s Baptism

A few weeks ago, our best friends daughter Hazel asked her Uncle Kit to baptize her. So this last weekend, along with her Young Life leader, Kit baptized our Hazel Rose at the beach.

End of an era…

One of our FAVORITE local date spots is closing its doors at the end of the month. Rutabegorz has locations in Orange, Tustin, and Fullerton, its original location. That’s where we fell in love with the place. We ordered it while we were in the hospital with Ryder as soon as I could eat food after my c/s. For me, when we saw that Tustin had one, it made Tustin feel like home faster after we had moved there. It’s location has been open over 46 years and is right in old town. It was a favorite Friday date spot, the staff is incredible, and the food was so good. We had to get a date in last week while we still could. I know it sounds silly to miss a place, but it was really special to us…

Our little booth, we will miss you.
